Prioritize Workers in Transportation Stimulus
As the spread of COVID-19 continues to impact our daily lives and the future of the transportation sector, it is critically important that the relief packages that are being debated in Congress right now include strong healthcare and economic protections for workers in our industry.
As you all know, workers in the transportation sector have been disproportionately hurt by the pandemic. Right now, transport workers across the country are among the first to stand up to help keep the public safe while risking our lives on the job, yet we are also the first to suffer the economic effects of the virus.
Unfortunately, the stimulus proposal under consideration in the Senate completely fails to address the crisis that TWU members in the air division are facing. Our demands are simple: any stimulus proposal must focus first and foremost on protecting workers’ paychecks, prohibiting the destruction of our contracts through bankruptcy, and ensuring that this money does not undermine collective bargaining.
